Local Events during Congressional Recess, 3/26-4/6

Thursday, March 29ACT for Women and Girls New Office Open House1900 N. Dinuba Blvd. Suite A, Visalia4-6:30 p.m. Stop by and meet program participants (many recently returned from the UN conference in New York), staff, and board of directors. Appetizers and drinks will be served. ACT is a force in the community, a huge SVC ally, and cohost of several candidate forums we both are hosting. Find out about their enriching work in the lives of young people in our area.

Friday, March 30. Nunes’ Challenger Andrew Janz is opening his South Valley Campaign Headquarters in Visalia1528 S. Mooney Blvd., Visalia. At 5:00 p.m. there will be a rally along Mooney Blvd in front of HQs and at 6:00, the Open House will begin. There will be  snacks and refreshments as well as a campaign update from Andrew!

***Tuesday, April 3 Nunes Watch Rally.  Corner of  Main and Church in downtown Visalia.  11:30am-12:30pm. Wear black (in mourning at the absence of our representation) and we will have signs for you. This is the second rally during the congressional break. Extremely powerful when we all show up in force.

Thursday, April 5CD#22 “Adopt a District” Town Hall with Congressional Representative TED LIEU…because Mr Nunes has deserted his district. Rep Lieu (CD#33 in LA) has “adopted” us, and will be conducting a free, open, and public Town Hall for our district. Clovis West High School Cafeteria, 1070 E Teague in Fresno from 7:00-9:00 p.m. The event is free but you must have a ticket to get in and you must show ticket and ID at the door. Here is the link to sign up for tix. Also please read guidelines there for attendance. Note: Attendance limited to 275 and as of today over half of tix are already reserved, so sign up soon!

There are many exciting events during this congressional break to celebrate the coming change in leadership that our elections this year will bring. Make time to attend several!

Saturday, April 7Days of Action: Register, Mobilize, and Organize Democrats1320 W Walnut Ave (crnr of Walnut and Giddings). 9:00 a.m. Meet at the Tulare County Democratic Central Committee Office at 1320 W Walnut at 9:00am. There will be a short training period and then the volunteers will be off to walk their assigned areas. Lunch will be served at 1:30. Contact the office at 559 754 0566 for more details. Let’s turn this county BLUE!

***Monday, April 9 April Monthly SVC meeting at the home of Betsy Gaudette Cross, 5941 W Buena Vista Ct., Visalia 93291 6:45-8:15 p.m.  (Directions: From 198 go north on Akers, past Goshen Avenue. Turn into the second development on the left which is Marseille, [just past The Lakes]. That street is called BUENA VISTA AVENUE, and Betsy is at the end in the cul-de-sac, 2nd from the end, left hand side.  GPS is not always reliable to get you there!).  

Wednesday, April 11.  Candidate Forum for Congressional District #22.  Lindsay.  (I’m trying to track down more info on this.)

Sunday, April 15.  Local “Tax March” demonstration in coordination with the national Tax March group.  The demonstration will be in Tulare on the Prosperity Street  Freeway 99 Overpass at the T-intersection with Blackstone. We will display our banners and signs to the travelers on the freeway and to the heavy traffic that travels both directions on the Prosperity overpass. There is plenty of free parking in the shopping center just east of the overpass. Please look for upcoming notices and emails about the march. Wednesday, April 18, then Friday, April 20.  Author Andy Fisher in a talk, “Big Hunger: Food Security for Social Change.” 18th–Lecture at Fresno State Room ED187 from noon to 1.  Then 20th–At Foodlink Tulare Co., 611 2nd Ave., Exeter from 6-8 p.m. (attend either or both events). Even in our agriculturally abundant area Food Justice needs to always be present in our conversation. Monday, April 23.  Candidate Forum for Superintendent of Schools for Tulare CountyTulare County Office of Education at 6200 S Mooney Blvd5:30 p.m.  Sponsored by the local branches of PTA and CTA.

Comision Honorifica Mexicana Americana

466 E. Putnam, Porterville, CA 93257 from 

6:00-8:00 p.m. These are both CRITICAL positions for us in the Tulare County region. To be held in Spanish (w English translation available). Incumbent in Dist #26: Devin Mathis. Challengers: current Visalia mayor (and primary-ing to the right of Mathis) Warren Gubler, and our own Jose Sigala, current Tulare City Councilman. (Virginia Gurrola is vying in the Board of Sups. This position is for Porterville/Springville/Ducor area of Tulare County).

Ongoing regular meetings of groups you may find of interest:

Regular Visalia City Council meetings are held the 1st and 3rd Monday’s at 7 in the Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 707 W. Acequia, Visalia, CA 93212.

The Visalia Democratic Club meets in Visalia on the 4th Wednesday of the month, at China Garden Restaurant, located at 1634 S. Mooney Blvd. A no-host dinner starts at 6:00 p.m.; the meeting starts at 6:45 p.m.
